Spring 1934 Diary Entry

Spring of 1934

  Dear Diary,

I can’t believe The Silverton Home for Girls has been open for several months now! Time sure flies, but life has been so good. Not long ago this was just a big dusty mansion with not a bit of love, but now it’s a home echoing with laughter and joy in every corner.

In the evenings I sit out back on the porch swing and watch. I watch the girls running back and forth, enjoying the space to really breath—space some of them have never known. I watch the chickens pecking around the ground for bugs, before finally making their way to their coop before darkness fully covers the land. I watch the sun slowly sink into the horizon, casting a beautiful orange glow over all the yard.

Well, it’s getting too dark to write further, so I’ll close for now. Keep pressing onward and keep your eyes fixed up toward our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When we fix our eyes on ourselves or this world we feel hopeless and discouraged. It’s only when we fix our eyes on Him that we can have true peace.

   Farewell!

Prequel to A Greater Purpose?

Hello! Eventually I'm hoping to publish a prequel to Greater Purpose. It will be about my life in India before coming back to Colorado. I can't wait until I an share that with all of you! For now though, here is a little sneak peak, from the prelude.

“Where are we going?” The little girl asked her nanny as they hurried towards town on foot, almost in a run. “Is everything okay?”  Hilda looked down at the girl, squeezing her hand a little tighter, and then at the toddler she carried on her hip. They trusted her completely. What could she say? So badly she longed to comfort them—to reassure them and say everything would be okay. But would it? These girls had been raised in luxury, living in the finest house and riding in the finest carriages. They were accustomed to having everything done for them. Hilda would wake them up each morning and help them change, combing Evangeline’s long black hair and tying a ribbon around dear little Charity’s curls. Breakfast was hot and ready by the time they descended the grand stairway and made their way to the table. Would they be able to survive in a place like this? More importantly though, they were used to being loved. The Master and Missus loved them so, and Hilda loved them too.

Just then they reached town and saw a taxi which Hilda quickly hailed. She held the door as Evangeline climbed in, then carefully slid in beside her, sitting Charity down on the seat in the middle.

“Salem Orphanage please,” she told the driver, and soon the taxi was moving down the street. Orphanage. The word that brings to mind the place where dozens of children crowd together in dirty, cold living corners. A place where angry keepers holler at the young ones to keep their voice down, and scarcely enough food is served to fill their hungry bellies. A place where children can hardly see the light of day, for unless the yard is fenced in thoroughly, they fear runaways. Oh, how can I leave the wee ones there? But leave them there she knew she must, for what other option did she have?

Goodreads / Book Recommendations?

Hello everyone, Evangeline here! So, I ordered  hardcopy of A Greater Purpose, and I just love how it turned out! I love the quality of it, and the cover turned out really clear. I took it to the school room and showed all the girls. They are pretty thrilled to be in a book and can't wait for me to read it to them. Lina helped me snap some pictures, so I'll share them here!

Also, I just added it to Goodreads, so if any of you have read it, would you mind leaving a quick an honest review? Here is the link to that! : ) Goodreads

Also, I've been finagling with Pinterest some, but being from 1910, I'm still trying to get the hang of it. 😂

Lastly, do any of you have any book recommendations? Any books that stood out to you? Have any of you published a book recently or have a friend who did? All recommendations welcome in the comment section!

Silverton Home for Girls Poem

Hello! Here is a poem I wrote shortly after we moved into the "Silverton Home for Girls." I hope you enjoy!

Silverton Home for
Girls
This home is very different
Than most other homes, you see.
It takes a lot of people
To make our big family.

There’s Hilda in the kitchen,
She cleans and cooks real well;
And Charity’s in the school room,
Her teaching’s really swell.

Lina is an artist,
She loves to paint and draw.
She spends many hours painting,
And her sketches fill the walls.

They’ve deemed me the head seamstress,
And the task they’ve given me
Is to mend and darn and patch the holes
And sew up dresses plenty.

Sean McGrady works real hard
At making chairs and toys;
He sells them at the market
To little girls and boys.

Annie McGrady spends her days
Tending the youngest girls.
She rocks them, bathes them,
Soothes their cries, and combs their little curls.

The girls’ days are kept full,
But they’re learning oh, so much.
Like reading, drawing, sewing,
And gardening, and such.

When God first sent me here,
Across the wide, blue sea,
His purposes were greater
Than I ever could foresee.

Announcement (No, the Blog is Not Ending!)

Isn't this little waterfall pretty? We came across it while hiking last week.

Hello everyone! Today it's Laura writing, instead of Evangeline. I'm sure you've noticed I haven't written on here too much lately. One of the reasons is because I'm not sure I want to keep sharing chapters on here. I'm trying to make a book about "A Greater Purpose", and I don't want everyone to already know what will happen. Although the book will be a bit different, and definitely have more in it than the blog posts, I don't want to share too much, and discourage everyone from reading the book.
Also, I was hoping this blog would be an outlet for Evangeline to share about things she loves, which it is, but I think it would make more sense after people know her better. Once I finish her book, and people know her story, it will make more sense when she shares random extra things about herself.
In conclusion, this blog is not over! I just think I'm going to hold off on it for a little while. Hopefully I can publish the book, and if I do, I'll definitely be posting about it on here. I would share the cover reveal on here once it gets closer to publication, and do a giveaway for it when it comes out. After that, I would hope to make this a fun place where Evangeline posts diary entries, recipes, contests, and other fun things!
I'll still be posting on Flowers In My Basket , so you can follow along there! I hope you all have a great rest of Summer!
